Level 1- Time span: up to 9 months  
Basic hairdressing skills as required be an assistant.
 
Level 2 - Time span: up to 30 months

This is a basic level of hairdressing skills, giving a sound basis for working as a junior stylist.  
 
  Apprenticeship - Time span: up to 24 months  
  This is when a Level 2 qualification as above is sought and some additional skills such as numeracy and communication are found to be good enough to gain extra qualifications.  
     
  Level 3 - Time span: up to 12 months  
  Non routine hairdressing skills demonstrating a high level of skill.  
     
  Level 3 Apprenticeship - Time span: up to 24 months  
  The higher level of Level 3 Hairdressing plus some additional skills such as numeracy, communication, and I.T. are sought, to certificate extra qualifications.  
   
  City & Guilds NVQ Hairdressing Level 1  
 

Level 1 is designed for those just starting out in hairdressing and need an introduction into what the job involves, skills covered are basic.

The achieve an NVQ in Hairdressing at Level 1 you must complete four mandatory units and two optional unit. The unit titles are as follows:-

Mandatory Units

   
  Student Colouring Hair  
  G20 - Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety  
  G3 - Contribute to the development of effective working relationships  
  GH1 - Shampoo and conditioning hair  
  GH3 - Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas  
  Optional Units (two to be chosen)  
  G2 - Assist with salon receptionist duties  
  GH2 - Blow dry hair  
  GH4 - Assist with hair colouring services  
  GH5 - Assist with perming hair services  
GH6 - Plait and twisthair using basic techniques
GH7 - Remove hair extensions
     
  Assessment  
  Assessment is achieved by practical observation, oral questioning, written work and passing essential knowledge papers set by the awarding body. To pass an NVQ unit you must demonstrate you meet the requirements of the performance criteria by collecting appropriate
evidence as specified by the evidence requirements. This evidence is assessed against the
national standards by a qualified assessor, who will be allocated to you by Headjogs.

  There are no formal entry requirements, but potential learners must attend a interview and demonstrate an interest in the subject and motivation to succeed.

  City & Guilds NVQ Hairdressing Level 2  
  This course aims to provide the learner with all the knowledge and skills that they will require for  
  a career in hairdressing.  
     
  To achieve and NVQ in Hairdressing at Level 2 you must complete all eight mandatory units and an optional unit.  
     
  Mandatory Units  
  G20 - Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety (HSS 1)  
  G17 - Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation (ICS Unit 9)  
  G7 - Advise and consult with clients  
  GH8 - Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp  
  GH9 - Change hair colour  
  GH10 - Style and finish hair  
  GH11 - Set and dress hair  
  GH12 - Cut hair using basic techniques  
  Optional Units (One to be chosen)  
  G4 - Fulfill salon reception duties  
  G18 - Promoteadditional services or products to clinents (ICS Unit 10)  
  G8 - Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work  
  GH13 - Plait and twist hair  
  GH14 - Perm and Neutralise hair  
  GH15 - Attach hair to enhance style  
   
   
     
  Assessment  
  As with all NVQs you will be assessed on a continuous basis within a realistic working environment. To pass an NVQ unit you must demonstrate you meet the requirements of the performance criteria by collecting appropriate
evidence as specified by the evidence requirements. This evidence is assessed against the
national standards by a qualified assessor, who will be allocated to you by Headjogs.

  Apprenticeship  
 

Apprenticeships are nationally designed programmes for 16 to 24 year olds who have left full-time education or are already in employment. They offer young people the opportunity to start their career through a combination of learning options and work experience.

 
     
  The Apprenticeship covers basic cutting, colouring and perming techniques leading to a career at Junior Stylist level.  
     
  The Apprentice will achieve  
   
     
  Assessment  
  Progress is continuously assessed through written, oral and practical assignments. Apprentices will be expected to present their written assessments, projects and assignments plus practical evidence in a portfolio for final assessment and verification. Assessments of practical work will be undertaken at the Headjogs Salon and/or the Workplace depending on the individual Apprentice’s circumstance.

  City & Guilds NVQ Hairdressing Level 3  
  NVQ Hairdressing Level 3 allows advancement of existing skills and an opportunity to gain specialist and managerial qualifications.  
     
  To achieve an NVQ in Hairdressing Level 3 you must complete nine units,  four mandatory units and five optional units (of which only one can be chosen from group two).  
     
  Mandatory Units  
  G22 - Monitor procedures to safely control work operations (new HSS 3)  
  G18 - Promote additional services or products to clients (ICS Unit 10)  
  G21 - Provide hairdressingconsultation services  
  GH16 - Creatively cut hairusign a combination of techniques  
  Optional group 1 Units (all 5 may be chosen from this group)  
  GH17 - Colour hair using a variety of techniques  
  GH18 - Provide colour correction services  
  GH19 - Creative style and hair dressing  
  GH20 - Creatively dress long hair  
  GH21 - Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills  
  GH22 - Create a variety of permed effects  
  GH23 - Provide creative hair extension services  
  Optional group 2 Units (only 1 may be chosen from this group)  
  G11 - Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business  
  G19 - Support client service improvements (ICS Unit 37)  
  H32 - Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities

  Level 3 Apprenticeship  
  Modern Apprenticeships are nationally designed programmes for 16 to 24 year olds who have left full-time education or are already in employment. They offer young people the opportunity to start their career through a combination of learning options and work experience  
     
  The advanced modern apprenticeship covers more advanced hairdressing techniques including product promotion and alternative therapies such as Indian Head Massage.

Apprentices will be expected to present their written assessments, projects and assignments plus practical evidence in a portfolio for final assessment and verification. Assessments of practical work will be undertaken at the Headjogs Salon and/or the Workplace depending on the individual Apprentice’s circumstance.  
     
  Entry Requirements  
 

No formal requirements but you will be expected to attend an initial assessment to ascertain which course will be best suited for you.
